What Grok Imagine is

Grok Imagine is image and video generation inside Grok, the assistant built by xAI. It lives at grok.com/imagine and in the Grok apps for iOS and Android. Technically it is not one model but two branches: images (currently Image 2.0) and video (Video 1.5).

The thing that sets the video branch apart from most rivals is that sound is generated in the same pass as the picture. There is no separate voice-over or foley step: the model returns a clip of roughly 1 to 15 seconds with its audio track already attached. That trick is exactly what made Grok Imagine go viral in the summer of 2025, back when the service was free for everyone.

Grok Imagine Image 2.0: region edits and background removal

Image 2.0 shipped on August 7, 2026 and became the Quality mode inside Grok. xAI claims second place in the world both for text-to-image and for image editing — first place in both arena tables on that date belongs to OpenAI’s gpt-image-2.

What is genuinely new if you look at the work rather than the leaderboard:

• Region-level editing: a magic wand changes only the area you point at, and segmentation selects an object cleanly along its outline.
• Background removal with transparency — the subject exports as a cut-out PNG you can drop into a product card or a layout.
• Up to five reference images in a single generation, replacing the manual compositing that used to come first.
• Deliberate typography and layout: the model plans where text sits in the frame instead of scattering letters.
• 1K and 2K resolutions and around thirteen aspect ratios, from 1:1 and 3:4 to 9:16 and 16:9.
• Ready-made presets for product shots, headshots, e-commerce, game assets and marketing layouts.

Grok Imagine Video 1.5: 1080p, audio and seven references

The video branch went generally available in the xAI API on June 16, 2026, and the July 31 update added text-to-video, native 1080p, a voice reference that keeps a character’s face and voice consistent across shots, and multi-reference control with up to seven visual anchors per scene.

xAI API pricing is per second of output: $0.08 per second at 480p, $0.14 at 720p and $0.25 at 1080p — so a ten-second 1080p clip runs about $2.50 if you are a developer with API access. Image 2.0 output sits at roughly $0.04–0.08 per image across third-party providers, plus about a cent for the input image when editing.

Why people look for a way around Grok Imagine

The reasons are logistical and financial rather than a complaint about the model.

• Free generation is gone. xAI narrowed access on January 9, 2026 after the deepfake controversy and closed image and video generation for free accounts entirely on March 19: the chat stayed, the create buttons did not.
• Paid access needs a foreign card. X Premium is around $8, SuperGrok Lite around $10, SuperGrok $30 and SuperGrok Heavy $300 per month — cards issued in several regions simply will not go through.
• Limits went weekly. In June 2026 xAI replaced daily rate limits with a single weekly pool shared across chat and media: one video generation can consume a noticeable slice of the week, and the pool sizes are not published.
• Access is unstable in some regions. Both grok.com and the Grok apps typically need a VPN, which means dropped sessions and lost generations.
• One ecosystem is not always the best frame. By xAI’s own claim Image 2.0 sits second behind gpt-image-2, and in video Seedance 2.0, Kling 3.0 and Veo 3.1 each have their own edge on motion physics, resolution, audio and shot length. None of them live inside Grok.

Grok Imagine inside Twin AI

There is nothing to "replace" here — the model itself runs in Twin AI as a video generator. The money: SuperGrok versus credits

An xAI subscription pays off for people who generate every day and in volume: $30 a month for SuperGrok at roughly fifty images a day is honest arithmetic if you keep hitting the ceiling and your card works.

Twin AI runs on the other logic — you pay per actual generation in credits. Credit packs are 1,000 for 990 ₽, 3,000 for 2,490 ₽ and 8,000 for 5,490 ₽; plans are Start at 1,290 ₽ a month for 2,600 credits, Active at 2,490 ₽ for 5,000 and Pro at 4,490 ₽ for 15,000. A video is 600 credits and an image is 200 — so Start works out to about four clips or twelve images a month, and Pro to twenty-five clips.

Signup grants bonus credits and there is a daily bonus, but to be straight about it: one image costs 200 credits, so regular work still needs a pack or a plan. What you do get is billing through a local card or SBP, with no foreign payment gateway and no VPN.

Honest limits: when to stay on Grok

If you have a working card and stable access to X, Grok Imagine is a strong tool, and it is especially good where you want a clip with sound and no separate audio step, or a quick region fix right inside the chat. Image 2.0 with segmentation, background removal and five references covers a lot of everyday design work, and multi-reference video helps hold a character between scenes.

Twin AI makes sense when the obstacle is the wrapper rather than the model: the VPN, the payment, the weekly limit pool and the fact that trying a different model means yet another subscription.
